A Plea from the Patron
I am sure the members of the Timaru Golf Club appreciate having Peter Hayes extending his Gleniti Pro Shop business to our club with Darryl Perham and his associates providing an excellent service to our members and visitors
 
Indeed a big improvement since Mark Sandri finished up, leaving members themselves to provide a part-time service without a Pro Shop to supplement their efforts.
 
For Peter Hayes to prosper and continue the present set up depends on our support and involvement which wherever possble means purchasing golf equipment, lessons and other items that are always available
 
I urge all of us to think twice about purchasing golf equipment and other items from outside sources when your support at our Pro Shop can only preserve what we have and never want to loose.

And we're back - not sure if that is a good thing or not, but as I have control of this particular platform, that's the way it is - fell free to ignore the following piffle, or not as you wish.
 
As luck would have it, I had the pleasure of playing in the immigrants group yesterday (x2 South Africans, an American and myself, the Brit) with the  eventual trophy winner, Jeff Marrett who hit a 69 off the stick that was a pleasure to watch - especially as he was my partner and carried me around the course to the beer
 
I couldn't help but wonder though what had attracted 4 golfers to our very own little Timaru. 
 
I must confess that when we told people we were emmigrating to New Zealand, the response was positive unless they had actually been to Timaru, in which case the response was invariably, "Why Timaru?"
 
For us the main reason was family, most of my wife's family live in the town, and so it was the logical place to come.  It was also the place furthest from the potential troubles caused by both Trump and Brexit - issues that are still with us and will continue to impact the globe for many years to come.
 
We have also come to learn that it is a great place for the kids to grow up, and hearing the stories from my fellow travellers, I don't think some of us realise how lucky wqe are - tales were told of children not being allowed to walk to school unaccompanied (a criminal offence in some US Startes, and an absolute no-no in South Africa); of parents with not only the usual South African security measures of 12 foot walls topped with electrified wires, but also with steel security doors to their bedroom.
 
Of course, like everywhere else New Zealand has it's own problems, cost of living being one of the biggest concerns at the moment, but I just thought it worth remembering that for all of the issues we do have here, we are still remarkably lucky to live where we do.
